The unlikely birthplace of this future eco-organisation was a simple concrete yard in Leith.
The founder of “Earth in Common” is Evie Murray. Her dream was for her children to be able to play and spend time outdoors, even while living in an urban environment.

So, Evie began transforming her own back garden into an eco-haven, cultivating fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Crucially, she involved her children in the process, turning it into an engaging and educational activity for them.

Going Further

As time went on, Evie’s passion only grew. She actively shared with friends, family, and acquaintances about the social, environmental, and even educational benefits of growing eco-produce in an urban setting. This eventually inspired others to join her initiative.
It’s hardly surprising that what began as a simple hobby blossomed into something much larger, evolving into a full-fledged project with a team of curators and other key roles.
Beyond that, the organisation periodically announces various job openings. These opportunities are incredibly diverse, ranging from financial administrators to assistants, organisers, and coordinators. This not only allows locals to get closer to environmental protection but also helps them find employment.

A Dedicated Space

One of “Earth in Common’s” most exciting initiatives is undoubtedly “Edible Schoolyards.” The City of Edinburgh Council even entrusted the organisation with managing a substantial plot of land. This area, located in a well-known but previously neglected part of the city, has been transformed into a dedicated space called “Leith Community Croft.” Essentially, it’s an innovative urban farm that cultivates organic food. This zone also offers opportunities for enjoyable and beneficial outdoor activities, making it a great place for anyone to relax and unwind. After all, the main goal of “Earth in Common” is to make healthy food and nature accessible to everyone, adults and children alike.

Gradual Development

It’s worth noting that in its initial years, the organisation focused on tackling problems such as a broken food system, climate change, and local, national, and international social inequality.
However, as “Earth in Common” steadily strengthened its position in society and gained widespread recognition, a new phase of its work began.
Specifically, the organisation announced plans to create an entire eco-community and cultivate healthy produce. But, to realise these ambitions, a series of initiatives needed to be developed, with the Urban Croft model being a key part of this vision.

A Crucial Initiative

Thanks to its comprehensive understanding of the challenges facing Edinburgh’s farms, “Earth in Common” is striving to develop methods that strengthen the local economy and foster social solidarity and well-being.
The organisation’s primary objective is to assist numerous Scottish communities in cultivating neglected land to establish farms. The representatives of “Earth in Common” firmly believe that empowering urban communities will ultimately promote food sovereignty.

Thus, Edinburgh’s environmental protection organisations play a vital role in developing and shaping eco-awareness.
