It is a park with a job to do: woodland, hedge, meadow, burn and a large pond packed into a narrow strip, holding together a wildlife corridor through a dense eastern suburb. Kingfishers work the water, mute swans raise a brood here almost every year, and a wooden boardwalk with two viewing platforms takes you out over the pond. The western half is more wooded and burn-focused, with the water tumbling between trees; the eastern half opens out around the pond, where the boardwalk, the open water and the meadow margins sit together. Lothian services 12, 21 and 26 have stops nearest to the park, and the wider Portobello area is served by a dense cluster of routes including the 15, 42, 45 and 49, so getting here from the city centre is straightforward at almost any hour. The nearest rail station is Brunstane on the Borders Railway, the first stop out of Edinburgh Waverley, though it is a fair walk away; the more scenic approach is to arrive at the Portobello promenade and walk inland. Entry is free at all times, the park has no gates or admission of any kind, and the through-paths are surfaced. Allow forty minutes for a there-and-back walk, longer if you stop on the boardwalk, which most people do.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"When_to_visit\"><\/span>When to visit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spring is the standout season, when the swans nest, the burn runs full and the woodland fills with birdsong before the leaves close in. Summer brings the meadow into flower and makes the boardwalk a genuinely pleasant place to stand still; the park is also the easiest shady escape from a crowded Portobello beach on a hot day. Autumn turns the woodland strip gold and thins the leaf cover, which paradoxically improves the odds of seeing a kingfisher along the burn. Winter is the serious birdwatching season, when wildfowl numbers on the pond rise, water rail become easier to detect at the margins, and the bare trees open up views along the water that summer hides completely.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Good_to_know\"><\/span>Good to know<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The name is old: Figgate appears in the record as &#8220;Fegot&#8221; as early as 1466, and is generally read as coming from the Norse elements for cattle and for a way or pasture, describing the grazing along the burn. The lower banks were long covered by the Figgate Whins, the scrubby gorse that gave the burn its name. Those lands passed to Baron Mure and were feued out to William Jameson, who found a valuable bed of clay near the water and built a brick and tile works beside the stream from around 1765, later adding an earthenware pottery. The settlement that grew around the works was known as Brickfield before it took the name Portobello, so this modest burn is the reason the seaside suburb exists at all. The pond at the park&#8217;s eastern end is the flooded remnant of that industry&#8217;s claypit. The burn itself is the lower reach of a watercourse that rises in the Pentland Hills and passes Duddingston Loch before running through the park to the Firth of Forth.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Visitor_tips\"><\/span>Visitor tips<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Stand still on the boardwalk for ten minutes rather than walking straight through \u2014 most of the good sightings come to those who wait.<\/li>\n<li>Do not feed bread to the swans and ducks; the Friends group and the council both discourage it, and the pond&#8217;s water quality suffers for it.<\/li>\n<li>Combine the park with Portobello beach: the walk down the burn to the promenade is short and turns a park visit into a proper half-day out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Questions_answers\"><\/span>Questions &amp; answers<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Is Figgate Park free to enter?<\/strong> Yes, entirely. In the park you can see a lot of wildlife, as well as many friendly dog walkers who come out for a chat. The wooden walkways are closed, as is the pier for feeding the ducks.
