With a sister the problem is too much material rather than too little, and thirty years of it will not go into a line. What works is prose — four or five sentences that pick one thing, name it plainly and then stop. Not a list of qualities, but one memory or one honest admission, followed by what you want for her in the year ahead. Below are finished messages written that way: for an older sister and a younger one, for the years you live at opposite ends of the country, for a birthday that lands after a hard twelve months, from a brother who does not go in for this sort of thing, for the card itself, and for the two minutes when everyone goes quiet and looks at you.

Toggle

To an older sister

To a younger sister

When you live far apart

After a difficult year

From a brother

What to write in her birthday card

A few words out loud

Questions and answers

To an older sister

1
You were eleven and I was six and you already knew how to make a bad day smaller. Half of what I know about being decent to people I copied off you without ever saying so. It is time you were told. I hope this is the year somebody looks after you properly.

2
There is a version of my childhood in which I am braver than I was, and in it you are always standing slightly in front of me. You took the first arguments and the difficult conversations, and I arrived somewhere that had already been made safe. Thank you, at last, in writing.

3
I have watched you carry things this year that would have flattened most people, and do it while still asking after everyone else. Today I would like you to put all of it down. Many happy returns, and let somebody else make the tea.

4
For most of my life you have been the person I ring before I have decided what I think. You never tell me what to do, and you always ask the one question that makes the answer obvious. Happy birthday to my big sister, with more love than either of us would say aloud.

5
Somewhere along the way we stopped being the older one and the younger one and became two people who know everything about each other. This is my favourite version of us. You are still the first person I want to tell when anything happens. You have earned an easy year.

6
I remember you leaving home and the house going quiet in a way I had no words for at the time. I have spent the years since being quietly proud of what you did with all that room. Whatever you think you have not managed, from where I stand it looks like a life well made.

To a younger sister

1
I was there for all of it, so I know exactly how far you have come, and you never give yourself credit for the distance. The girl who cried at the school gate now handles things I would put off for a fortnight. Happy birthday, and be a little kinder to yourself this year.

2
Somewhere back there is an eight-year-old in a borrowed coat who followed me everywhere and refused to be shaken off. I am extremely glad she was not. You turned into the person I most like spending an afternoon with. Take the whole day for yourself.

3
I spent years assuming my job was to look out for you. Somewhere in the last decade you quietly started doing it for me, and I only noticed once it had been going on for a while. I hope this year gives you back some of what you keep handing out.

4
You walk into a room and everybody in it becomes slightly happier, and you appear to have no idea that you do it. I have watched it work at kitchen tables and in hospital corridors. Wishing you a birthday entirely on your own terms.

5
The best decision our parents ever took was having a second one, despite everything you did to my belongings between the ages of four and fifteen. You know the unedited story and you still turn up. Many happy returns, and I mean every word of it.

6
I know this year has asked a great deal of you and that you have said very little about it. You do not have to be fine today either. Whatever the next twelve months bring, you will not be doing them on your own. I love you very much.

When you live far apart

1
It is your birthday and I am the wrong distance away again. You are still the first person I want to tell things to, and the hours between us have never once stopped me. I hope the day is slow and the phone rings all afternoon. I shall ring last.

2
We have not lived in the same place for years and I still turn to say things to you in rooms you are not in. Whatever else the distance has managed, it has not made a dent in that. I hope today is warm and unhurried, and I will see you the moment I can.

3
Birthdays are the days when the distance stops being inconvenient and starts being rude. If I could be there I would be, with the wrong cake and far too much to say. Instead there is this, which will have to do the work of a hug.

4
I have counted, and we have now spent more birthdays apart than together, which I refuse to accept as permanent. The strange part is that you feel no further away than when we shared a landing. Put a date in the diary — I am coming, and staying longer than is polite.

5
There is a kind of homesickness that is really just missing one person, and today it is doing the rounds. I hope the house is full and that somebody else has hidden the washing up. Many happy returns, from considerably further away than I would like.

6
You have built a whole life somewhere I have barely seen, and every time we speak I am struck by how well you have done it. Being proud of someone at this range is peculiar — all of the pride and none of the evidence. Send photographs and answer none of my questions.

After a difficult year

1
This has not been the year anybody would have chosen for you, and I am not going to pretend otherwise on a card. I watched you keep going when there was no obvious reason to. Today is only a day when the rest of us get to say we are glad you are here.

2
Birthdays are harder when the year behind them has been heavy, and being asked to celebrate can feel like being asked to perform. So there is no performance required. Sit in it however you like. I am close by for whatever the next twelve months turn out to be.

3
You have spent this year absorbing things that were never yours to absorb, and never once made it somebody else’s weather. I would like the coming one to be considerably gentler with you, and I intend to help. Tell me what would actually be useful, and tell me early.

4
There is nothing useful I can say about the last twelve months, so here is something about you instead. You are still funny. You still ask after everybody. You still notice when someone else is struggling, which is frankly unreasonable. I hope this year owes you nothing.

5
I tried to write something hopeful and it kept coming out false, so here is the honest version. It has been a rotten year, you have got through it, and I have never admired you more. Ring me at any hour, including the ones you think are too late.

6
Some birthdays are for celebrating and some are simply for marking, and there is no shame in this one being the second kind. You are still standing and still yourself underneath it, and both of those took real work. I am here, and I love you.

From a brother

1
I am not built for messages of this sort, so read it once and we shall never discuss it again. You have been the steadiest thing in my life since before I can remember, and whatever I have got right, you had a hand in most of it. Happy birthday, sis.

2
Brothers are supposed to be useless at saying things like this, and I have kept the tradition faithfully for thirty years. So here it is in writing. This family would fall over without you propping it up. Let somebody else do the organising.

3
We spent most of our childhood in open warfare and I would not change a minute of it. Somewhere along the way you became the person I trust most with anything that matters. That happened quietly and I never mentioned it. Many happy returns to the sensible one.

4
It occurred to me recently that I have never thanked you for the times you covered for me, listened to me, or told me plainly that I was being an idiot. All three were needed and all three were free. Happy birthday to my sister, who has never sent me an invoice.

5
You have carried more of this family than anybody acknowledges, and never made a point of it. I do notice, even if I never say so. This year I would like you to do considerably less and be looked after considerably more, starting today.

6
I am the brother who forgets things, so let the record show that this year I did not. You are the person I would ring at three in the morning without hesitating, and it goes both ways, permanently. Whatever you need this year, ask me first.

What to write in her birthday card

1
A card is a small place for thirty-odd years, so here is the short version. You have been my closest friend since long before either of us chose it, and you have talked me out of two disasters and into one very good idea. Take the day slowly.

2
This is going in a card rather than a message because messages disappear and cards end up on a shelf. On the shelf, then: you are extraordinary, you are far too hard on yourself, and there is nobody I would rather have as a sister.

3
Cards usually wish people health, happiness and success, which is pleasant and says nothing. So instead: a year in which you are not the one holding everything together, help that arrives before you have to ask for it, and one afternoon this week with nothing in it at all.

4
You will read this, put it on the mantelpiece and forget it by Thursday, so I am making it count. Thank you for every time you picked up the phone when it would have been easier not to, and for the honesty, including the parts I did not enjoy. Many happy returns.

5
If you are reading this, the card arrived roughly on time, which is a personal record. What is inside it does not depend on the date: you are the person I measure things against, and this family is warmer for having you in the middle of it.

6
Every year I try to find new words and every year it comes out the same, so let us call it tradition. I am glad you exist. I am glad you are mine. I am glad you have never once let me get away with anything.

A few words out loud

1
I shall keep this short because she will make me stop. Most of us have somebody we ring when things go wrong, and a fair number of people in this room ring her. She has never made any of us feel like a nuisance for it. To my sister.

2
Two sentences before the food goes cold. I have known her longer than anybody here, which means I know what she was like at seven, and all the good bits were there already. She has spent the years since being kind to people who could do nothing for her in return.

3
I am not going to make a speech, largely because she would never forgive me. One thing, though: everybody at this table has a story about a time she turned up when she did not have to. Please raise a glass, and many happy returns to her.

4
A moment, and then we can all get on with the evening. There is nobody I have laughed harder with, argued more pointlessly with, or trusted more completely. It turns out you can manage all three with the same person for forty years. To my sister.

5
She hates this, so I shall be quick. She has had a year that would have knocked most people flat, and she is standing here asking whether everybody has had enough to eat. That is who we are celebrating this evening. To her health.

6
Before we start, one thing. Sisters are the people who know the unedited version and love you anyway, and I have been getting away with it for decades. So, in front of everyone, where it counts: thank you, and happy birthday.

Questions and answers

How do you write something heartfelt to a sister who deflects every time?

Give her somewhere to put it. People deflect because a warm sentence in the open air demands a warm sentence back, and not everybody can produce one to order. Writing removes the demand entirely: she can read it twice, react in private and never mention it again. If you are saying it aloud, place the affectionate line in the middle rather than at the end, so the moment moves on by itself, and let her make a joke afterwards without treating that as a rebuff. With a sister who deflects, the joke is usually how something is accepted rather than how it is refused.

We are not on good terms. Does a birthday message belong in that?

It can, but not as the main event. A message carrying an apology, a request for a conversation and a summary of who did what stops being a birthday message and becomes a negotiation with a date attached. If you want to reopen something, send the warm card now and the difficult message separately, later. What a card can do honestly is state a fact while asking for nothing: that you are thinking of her, that the door is open, that whatever else is true you would still like her to have a good day. Anything heavier tends to be read as pressure.

How do you tell the difference between something heartfelt and something heavy-handed?

By what it asks of her. A heartfelt message states something and then stops; a heavy-handed one keeps pressing until it gets a reaction, and she realises which one she is holding by about the third sentence. Two habits cause most of the trouble. The first is saying the same thing three times in slightly different words, which reads as somebody trying to convince himself. The second is announcing the effect in advance — I know this will set you off — which quietly hands her a job to do. Say the true thing once, in the plainest words you have, then follow it with something ordinary. If tears arrive, they arrive from the plain sentence, never from the one written to produce them.

Is a long written message better than simply ringing her?

They do different jobs, and the honest answer is usually both. A telephone call carries tone, timing and the ability to hear how she actually is, which no amount of careful writing replaces. What it cannot do is be reread, and something written can be gone back to on a bad afternoon in the middle of winter. The practical order is a card first, so she has it in her hand, then a call once the day has quietened down. If you can only manage one, ring her, and put the sentence you could not say into a message afterwards.

How much of the past should a birthday message carry?

One memory, not a catalogue. A single specific scene — a coat, a school gate, a car journey, a particular kitchen — does more work than a whole decade summarised, because it proves you were paying attention rather than assembling a tribute. The test is whether the detail could belong to anybody else: wishing you every happiness could go to a colleague, the coat could not. Keep it to one, name what it told you about her, then turn to the year ahead. That movement is what makes prose read as a message rather than a card verse.

Your sister’s birthday comes round, the family messages fill with the same six words from everybody, and you want to say something that is actually true without having the faintest idea where to begin.
