It’s fair to say that sustainable living and Edinburgh go hand in hand. The commitment of local residents to minimising their environmental impact is clear, reflected in their efforts to reduce waste, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. Find out more at edinburghname.
However, this doesn’t mean the city’s socio-economic development has stalled. On the contrary, Edinburgh successfully balances forward-thinking progress with a profound respect for the environment.
The New Leaf Co-op is a prime example of this deep-rooted eco-consciousness in action.
An Eco-Conscious Endeavour
At its core, The New Leaf Co-op is a shop specialising in a wide selection of genuinely organic and incredibly wholesome products. Crucially, most of their goods are sourced from local producers.
It’s also important to note that the shop exclusively uses eco-friendly and compostable packaging. This gives customers a unique opportunity not only to save money but also to actively participate in waste reduction and, as a result, help protect the environment.
How It All Began

The story of The New Leaf Co-op began in 2012. From the outset, founders Sophie, Neus, Will, Di, and Karen were determined to create a business where everyone was on an equal footing. They found the idea of a traditional hierarchy, with its lines of command and management, unacceptable. This led to the concept of a cooperative shop.
A period of intensive research into the complexities of running such a business followed. Of course, they also needed loans to get started. Immense passion and a tight-knit team of five weren’t enough on their own; they needed funding for start-up costs.
Fortunately, friends and family stepped in to support their exciting initiative.
Early Success and a Major Oversight

Before long, the first customers started to arrive. Sophie, Neus, Will, Di, and Karen were overjoyed, hardly believing their dream of owning a real shop had come true.
But simply opening the doors wasn’t enough. It took a great deal of hard work to gain the necessary experience and knowledge. For instance, when the team finally opened their shop, they realised that in their focus on the grand opening, they had completely overlooked another crucial detail: storage space. As a result, most of their stock was piled up in a large heap. When large weekly orders came in, they had to be stacked right in the middle of the shop floor, and poor customers literally had to step and jump over the boxes to get around.
Championing Environmental Care
As mentioned, The New Leaf Co-op is dedicated to protecting the environment and reducing its ecological footprint. Firstly, the shop sells almost all its loose products—including dried fruits, pulses, spices, and herbs—by weight and without plastic packaging.
Secondly, the majority of their products are vegan, with the exception of eggs, milk, cheese, and honey sourced from top local farmers.
The fruit and vegetables sold at The New Leaf Co-op are grown strictly without pesticides, and nearly all of them are certified organic. This means customers can fully trust the range on offer, as the products come with documented proof of their quality and safety, making them suitable for meals for even the youngest children.
The New Leaf Co-op’s Core Principles
But that’s not all. The shop operates on a set of ethical principles that form the foundation of its business and underscore its commitment to improving the environment.
In its work, The New Leaf Co-op prioritises:
- reducing plastic packaging;
- promoting organic produce;
- supporting the local economy and its producers;
- offering products at fair prices.

Protecting the environment is clearly a key priority for the community in Edinburgh. It’s a characteristic that’s impossible to miss, even on a brief visit to this remarkable city. There’s a concerted effort to highlight major environmental issues and, crucially, to propose solutions.
This initiative isn’t limited to large corporations, which are often the primary sources of environmental risk. Even small shops are eager to play their part in promoting a sustainable lifestyle by implementing measures to reduce plastic packaging and overall waste.
The New Leaf Co-op is a perfect example of this. Indeed, the very purpose behind the shop’s creation speaks to a deep eco-consciousness and a powerful desire to make our planet cleaner.
